This is what the card looks like before I punched the cut pieces out. Depending on the intensity of the laser the pieces just fell out, but with the gray I didn’t want burn marks so I had to turn down the intensity and it made it a little harder to punch out. The laser can create the finest details by cutting along bezier curves that I created in illustrator. I had so much fun making these and now I have a huge list of things I want to do with a laser cutter.

The National Museum of Mexican Art is a beautiful museum. I decided to go yesterday between my classes because of the Dia De Los Muertos exhibit, so I biked down to Pilsen. I’ve always been really fascinated by this holiday. I think it is really beautiful that the dead are remembered and celebrated instead of mourned.

Heart Chamber Orchestra :

The computer composition and visualization are determined based on the musicians heartbeats. The orchestra consists of 12 classical musicians and the artist duo TERMINALBEACH. The score is generated in real time by their heartbeats and they read and play it off of their computer screens. The musicians are wearing electrocardiogram sensors. A computer monitors and analyzes the states of their heartbeats. The information from the ECG composes a musical score using computer software. As they play their heartbeats influence and change the composition.

At this point I am working on sculpting and painting in Mudbox. You can see some of my reference images on the left.

Researching Polycystic Kidney Disease was really startling. The kidney that I am working at is at a very late stage of the disease. The kidneys enlarge as they become covered in cysts, while maintaining the basic shape of the kidney. The cysts can number in the thousands. In the fully developed stages the kidney can weigh as much as 20-30 pounds. Polycystic Kidney Disease is the most common genetic, life threatening disease and currently has no cure. It affects an estimated 12.5 million people worldwide. Transplants only become an option after the patient has reached end stage renal disease, which is a progressive loss in renal function.
